Green Retinol: The Gentler Path to Fewer Fine Lines

In late 2025, I sat down for an appointment with my esthetician. I'd mentioned my concerns about fine lines and wrinkles, and her answer was the one most people my age eventually hear: Vitamin C and Retinol.

I didn't hesitate — but I also didn't reach for just any retinol. I was already using several Oliveda products at that point, so I went straight to my consultant and asked if Oliveda made a retinol and a Vitamin C. They did, and I ordered both right away. That's how I found the F82 Green Retinol Face Elixir — and seven months later, it's become one of the few products I genuinely don't skip.

Why Traditional Retinol Can Be Rough on Skin

Before I get into what I've experienced, it's worth explaining why retinol has the reputation it does. Retinol works by speeding up cell turnover, which is exactly what makes it effective for fine lines, texture and pigmentation — but that same mechanism is what makes it hard on skin, especially at first. Dryness, peeling, redness, itching and a burning sensation known as "retinol burn" are all common, particularly in the first few weeks of use. Retinol can also make skin more sensitive to the sun, and it's generally not recommended for anyone who's pregnant, nursing or dealing with conditions like rosacea or eczema.

That's part of why estheticians (mine included) usually recommend starting slow — often just one or two nights a week — and gradually working up to more frequent use as skin adjusts. It's not that retinol is bad; it's that it asks a lot of your skin barrier right out of the gate.

What "Green Retinol" Actually Means

The Green Retinol in F82 isn't retinol at all — it's Bakuchiol, a plant-derived molecule found in the leaves and seeds of Psoralea Corylifolia, also known as Babchi, an Indian plant frequently used in Ayurvedic medicine. It's been studied for years as a retinol alternative, and a randomized, double-blind clinical trial published in 2019 found that Bakuchiol produced improvements in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation on par with retinol, with no statistically significant difference between the two.¹ The retinol group, however, reported noticeably more scaling and stinging throughout the study. That tradeoff — comparable results with far less disruption to skin — is exactly why Bakuchiol has become such a popular option for people with sensitive or reactive skin.

What Makes F82 Different

What I like about F82 is that it doesn't stop at Bakuchiol. It pairs it with Hydroxytyrosol, Oliveda's core antioxidant extracted from olive tree leaves, and Kahai Oil, which is naturally rich in vitamin A. Instead of layering Bakuchiol with more actives, the way a lot of retinol alternatives do, F82 pairs it with ingredients that soothe: The Hydroxytyrosol and Kahai Oil work together to calm redness, protect against environmental stress and even out pigmentation, while the Bakuchiol handles collagen support and softening the look of fine lines. It's also a waterless formula, which is consistent with how Oliveda builds all of its products.

My Experience So Far

I've been using F82 for about seven months now, in the evening, a few drops massaged into my face and neck after cleansing. The biggest changes I've noticed are in texture and visibly softened brown spots. I can't say with complete certainty how much is the F82 and how much is just consistency in my routine overall, but I never went through anything resembling a retinol adjustment period. No peeling, no redness, no easing in required.

That said, if you're new to Bakuchiol, or to active ingredients in general, it's still smart to introduce anything new gradually — the same one- or two-nights-a-week approach estheticians recommend for retinol isn't a bad way to start with any active, even a gentler one like this.

How I Use It

Two to three drops in the evening, after cleansing. Massage in circular motions across the face and neck. If you're already using another Oliveda serum, F82 can follow it — apply your serum first, wait a couple of minutes, then layer the F82 on top. That's it — simple enough to fit into whatever routine you already have.

If you've been told you need a retinol and the idea makes you nervous, or if you've tried retinol before and your skin fought back, I'd love to help you figure out if Green Retinol is the better fit for you. Reach out to me directly and I'll help you find what actually works for your skin.
